Truly one of
Europe’s great cities, with its sweeping grand boulevards, unique Left Bank
and majestic monuments, Paris has an appeal all its own. Our resident local
expert takes us down the Champs-Elysees to view the Arc de Triomphe, Place
de la Concorde, the Eiffel Tower and the magnificent Gothic Cathedral of
Notre Dame. Later today, enjoy a special presentation from a member of the
French Federation of Gay Business as they discuss their organization and its
impact on gay and lesbian culture in Paris. The latter part of the day is at
leisure; perhaps relax in a sidewalk café or stroll through the bohemian
district of Montmartre. |

Morning & Afternoon |
|
After
breakfast, an exciting optional full day excursion is offered today, as we
combine the best of Art and Architecture. First, we visit The Louvre
with an expert local guide. In its successive architectural
metamorphoses, it has dominated central Paris since the late 12th century.
Built on the city's western edge, the original structure was gradually
engulfed as the city grew. The dark fortress of the early days currently is
home to some of the world’s great works, including the Mona Lisa.
Later, we take a short drive into the country to visit the impressive Palace
of Versailles. Built by King Louis XIV, enjoyed by Louis XV and paid for
with his life by Louis XVI, the palace became the envy of every other
European ruler. Our guided tour takes us through the State Apartments,
including the famous Gallery of Battles and Hall of Mirrors. You will be
amazed at the opulence of this great home. |

After breakfast,
an optional day trip is offered as you enjoy a short train ride of the
countryside on your way to see one of the most impressive Gothic churches in
France. This UNESCO World Heritage site was partly built starting in 1145,
and then reconstructed over a 26-year period. Chartres Cathedral is
adorned with fine sculptures from the middle of the 12th century,
magnificent 12th- and 13th-century stained-glass windows, a unique labyrinth
floor and the veil of the Virgin Mary, all in remarkable condition, combine
to make this church a masterpiece. |
