Photos from past Carnaval trips

Carnaval in Rio de Janeiro is the biggest pre-Lenten celebration in the world. During Carnaval everyone indulges in all the pleasures they will need to give up during Lent. It is a party that is meant to include everyone – if you know how to navigate the festivities, and of course, we do!

With thousands of participants and lasting all night long, the dazzling Samba parades are the centerpieces of Carnaval. These parades pit Rio’s Samba Schools in a fierce competition of artistic prowess in music, dancing, costume design and float presentation. With Journey Out you will not only see the parade, you’ll get to dance along with a distinguished Samba School. We’ll set you up with a fabulous costume (yours to keep), give you samba lessons, and then make you a star!

Our Journey Out Carnaval package also includes tickets to the best gay masked ball and VIP passes to a great gay dance club.

But there is more to Journey Out’s trip to Rio than the hedonism of Carnaval. We’ll visit Rio’s most famous landmarks: Sugar Loaf and Corcovado. Corcovado (Hunchback) is a mountain that rises 2,700 feet straight up from the city and offers spectacular panoramas of Rio and its surrounds. At the summit sits the statue that is the symbol of Rio: Cristo Redentor (Christ the Redeemer). At night, this brightly-lit statue is a beacon visible from all over the city.

What trip to Rio would be complete without the achingly beautiful white-sand beaches? Copacabana and Ipanema are not just figments of some songwriter’s imagination, you know. They are two of the most beautiful beaches in the world.

There is always something happening along Copacabana’s three miles of calm beach: drinking, singing, eating, martial arts, swimming, soccer and, of course, people watching.

Ipanema, Rio's most chic beach, is less frenzied but no less fun than Copacabana. Ipanema (with means rough water) is an ideal spot for surfing as well as swimming. Our group will be staying across the street from Ipanema beach.

A special feature of Journey Out’s Carnaval package will be an exploration of Brazilian cuisine. You’ll visit a traditional Rio street market, sample the unique foods of Brazil and, with a master chef, help prepare a meal for our group in the Brazilian "slow food" way.
